FAQ — Common Questions When Starting a Home Project

Thinking about a renovation, extension or new home? Here are some of the questions clients often ask when they first reach out — and how I approach them at Studio Simeon.

Do I need a clear brief before we talk?

No — not at all. The first meeting is simply about getting to know you, your home, and your aspirations.
If you have ideas or inspiration, great. If you don’t — that’s perfectly fine. I’m here to help you explore what’s possible based on how you live, what you value, and what your home could become.

When is the right time to involve an architect?

As early as possible. Even if you’re just beginning to explore ideas or considering a block of land, getting an architect involved can help you understand what’s possible before you commit. It often saves time, cost and stress down the track — especially on tricky sites, renovations that affect structure, or anything that involves approvals.

What does working with an architect actually involve?

More than just drawings. As an architect I listen closely — to how you live, what you value, and the character of your site. I help shape a design that fits your lifestyle and environment, coordinate any required consultants, and produce documentation for approvals or builder pricing. I aim to guide you through the process with clarity, care, and honest design decisions — long before anything gets built.

How involved will I need to be?

As much as you’d like. I collaborate with homeowners from the very beginning — your input helps shape the home. If you prefer to be hands-off, that’s fine. If you want to be deeply involved, that works too. The process is flexible. What matters most is a good understanding of your needs, and open communication.

Do I need to have everything figured out before we start?

Not at all. It’s normal (and often better) to begin with broad ideas — lifestyle needs, how spaces should feel, what may or may not be important. The design process thrives on flexibility, exploration, and refining ideas together. That’s often where the best homes come from.

Will you work with any builder — or do you recommend someone?

I can work with a builder of your choice. If you’d like help, I can also suggest builders I trust in the region with a record of quality, reliability, and respect for good design ethic. What matters most is that we pick someone aligned with the values of clarity, craftsmanship, and collaboration.

What’s the role of an architect vs a draftsperson or building designer?

There are real differences. A draftsperson or building designer may be able to draw up simple layouts — but as an architect, I bring deeper training: spatial thinking, structural awareness, planning skills, material knowledge, and design sensitivity. I help you navigate complex constraints, optimise light and space, address structural or site issues, and deliver a design that’s not only functional — but considered, elegant, and enduring.

What does the design process look like, and how long does it take?

Each project is different, but typically: we begin with an initial meeting and exploration of goals → concept design → refinement and documentation → approvals and builder pricing (if required) → construction. Timelines depend on scale, approvals, and scope, but I’ll walk you through what to expect early on so everything stays as calm and clear as possible.

What if I’m unsure about my budget or site potential?

That’s normal — most clients start uncertain. My job is to help you understand what’s realistic, where design decisions make the most difference, and how to balance aspirations with constraints. Together we’ll shape a plan that feels right, honest, and achievable.
