Hill Pavilion

An outdoor room for a rural landscape.

PROJECT VITALS

  • Location: Hunter Region, NSW

  • Type: Outdoor Living Addition

  • Service: Design & Documentation

  • Status: Documentation Complete

THE CONTEXT

An elevated site with views over the local floodplains. The project required a functional outdoor area to connect the existing verandah, pool, and garden without compromising natural light to the interior living spaces.

THE DESIGN

The addition is conceived as a distinct pavilion. A double-skillion roof form cantilevers over the existing structure, leaving the original building fabric intact. To preserve interior light, a translucent bridge between the new and old roofs allows northern sunlight to wash into the home. Integrated masonry and timber screening provide wind protection while focusing views toward the landscape.

KEY FEATURES

  • Structural Independence: A cantilevered system that sits above the original roofline without intervention.

  • Light Preservation: A translucent roof zone designed to maintain natural light levels in the primary living areas.

  • Environmental Response: Timber batten screening and masonry walls used to mitigate wind exposure and define service zones.
