small house

More home, same house.

PROJECT VITALS

  • Location: Cardiff South, NSW

  • Type: Alteration & Addition

  • Service Scope: Design Only (Phase 01)

  • Service: Concept Design

  • Status: Not constructed/Concept Complete

THE CONTEXT

A modest house with a secondary dwelling already on site, leaving limited yard and a constrained footprint to work with. The brief was clear: maximise the liveability of the small home without significantly expanding its perimeter, while creating a genuine connection to the backyard. Budget was modest, making considered design decisions all the more important.

THE DESIGN

The addition works within the existing building envelope, pushing to the boundary to recover usable space rather than adding bulk. The kitchen is reorganised around an integrated European laundry, which folds into a booth dining area — a compact arrangement that captures the warmth and informality the client was after. The living space is reworked to feel open and flexible, with generous rear openings drawing light into the plan. A timber deck extends the interior to the yard, giving a small family room to grow into.

KEY FEATURES

  • Booth Dining: An integrated kitchen and dining arrangement that makes efficient use of a compact footprint without sacrificing character.

  • European Laundry Integration: Laundry functions absorbed into the kitchen joinery, freeing floor area and simplifying the plan.

  • Flexible Living Plan: An open floor plan designed to adapt as the family grows, without requiring further intervention.
